Tips for Spending Less on Health Insurance and Medical Costs

If the high cost of medical coverage and health insurance has you down, remember that there are a number of ways to keep those expenses down. By practicing some common sense techniques and using every resource available to you, it’s possible to make a significant dent in your expenses for medical coverage. In the long run, these will save you money and keep your health insurance costs down.

Prescription Drug Plans

Most health insurance plans will offer some type of prescription drug plan. While these will help getyou discounts for the medicine you need, you may be able to save even more. First find out if your medicine is offered in a generic compound. Name brand medicines are inherently more expensive and generics offer the same medicine at a lower price. Also look into buying your medicine in larger quantities. Many health insurance plans will offer a three month supply of medications at a discounted rate.

Investigate a Health Savings Plan

By investing regularly in a Health Savings Plan, or HSA, you may be able to pay your medical costs with pre-tax dollars. Setting aside tax sheltered money to pay co-pays and prescription drug costs can save you thousands over the long haul.

Ask for Discounts

As simple as it sounds, you can sometimes save money just by asking. Doctors and hospitals aren’t above negotiating price, especially if you can offer cash payments. You have nothing to lose by asking.

Look for Free Medical Services

In the interest of public health, local and state governments often offer free services. These can take the form of vaccinations, cholesterol tests, mammograms, and other preventive health services.

Establish Good Health Habits
The first rule of keeping health insurance and medical costs low is to stay healthy. Make sure you eat the right foods, get plenty of rest, and regular exercise. And of course don’t smoke or use tobacco in any form. Avoiding tobacco often qualifies you for better rates automatically.

Group Health Insurance

Group Health Insurance is an option available to most companies both large and small.
Employers use Group Health Insurance to attract and keep quality employees, providing them with good medical care and peace of mind. The advantage of Group Health Insurance to both the company and the employee make it an attractive option in todays competitive business world.

For the employer Group Health Insurance is a benefit that aids in the recruiting and retention of talented workers. Most Group Health Insurance plans will be tax deductible, saving both the employer and employee money over the long term. For employees the benefits of Group Health Insurance will be lower costs, since risk is spread out over the group, and greater coverage for every dollar spent. Many employers also choose to add additional coverage to their plans, including dental, eye care, life insurance, and disability insurance.

What is Group Health Insurance?

Group Health Insurance is health coverage through a policy that insures a defined set of people. Rather than each person negotiating a health insurance policy on their own, coverage is combined into a single package of defined benefits. In order to qualify for Group Health Insurance a business can have as few as two full time employees, In general, the larger the group the more risk is spread and the more reasonable the cost.

Why Offer Group Health Insurance to Employees?

Employees are what make a business. In order to bring in and keep top level employees, businesses must be an attractive place to build a career. Prospective employees rate Health Insurance high on their list of benefits. In many cases, Group Health Insurance,
subsidized by the employer, is the only way to provide medical coverage for their families. Lower costs, increased coverage, and the pooling of risk make Group Health Insurance a great option for both workers and the organization.

Before You Buy Health Insurance

1) Explore your options. If your employer offers some type of Group Health Insurance you may be better off getting medical coverage through the group plan. This is especially true if you or a member of your family has any type of chronic or serious illness that would prevent them from getting good health insurance alone.

2) Before you buy health insurance be sure to get quotes from more than one company. Some health insurance agents are tied to one plan while others will be able to offer a menu of health insurance options. One isn’t necessarily better or worse, it just makes sense to see what’s out there before you make a decision.

3) Remember to check on the insurance available publicly. Most states have some type of health insurance plan for children, often called CHIPS, that provides free coverage for kids. Your income level will determine eligibility.

4) If your family is healthy, you may want to consider using a Health Savings Accounts or HSA in conjunction with a high deductible health insurance plan. The HSA offers a way to pay medical bills with pre-tax dollars while keeping your premiums lower and still protecting against big mediacl bills.

Life Insurance is basically a contract between the insurance company and an individual that bestows a payment on survivors in the event of the death of the insured. But it can be much more than that. Besides the death of the individual, benefits can also be paid for
terminal illness, dismemberment, and various other circumstances. In addition, the terms of the contract can be structured in different ways. Always be sure you understand the terms of your life insurance policy and work with your life insurance agent to institute a policy that bests fits your needs.

Term Life Insurance

Perhaps the simplest of life insurance policies is Term Life Insurance. Term Life Insurance supplies benefits to designated beneficiaries within a defined time span usually ranging from one to 20 years. While often the simplest type of life insurance, terms can still vary widely. For instance, Level Term Life Insurance means you’ll be paying the same premium for the same amount of coverage over the life of the contract. Term Life Insurance can be used for various purposes, such as mortgage protection, and is offered in several variations to fit certain circumstances. The major factor to remember is that Term Life Insurance is usually the least expensive and does not retain any residual value when the policy expires.

Whole Life Insurance

Whole Life Insurance is a different animal than Term Life Insurance. In general, Whole Life Insurance can be thought of as a combination of insurance and investment. In other words, over time Whole Life Insurance will provide death benefits while at the same time generating a cash value. Whole Life Insurance tends to be more costly but again the cash value may be utilized or borrowed against at some point in the term of the policy.

Universal Life Insurance

Universal Life Insurance is a variation on whole life and comes with several options. While it does accumulate cash value, the investment side of the equation can differ very widely. Some Universal Life Insurance policies will come with a minimum guaranteed return while others will be dependent on the return of defined investments.

For a small business the cost of offering a traditional group health insurance plan can be out of reach. Any business with a small number of employees is at a disadvantage when compared to larger companies. A good alternative may be Health Savings Accounts combined with a high deductible health insurance policy.

A Health Savings Account allows employees to set aside money to help pay medical costs. When combined with a low cost high deductible Health Insurance plan a Health Savings account can lower health insurance costs considerably. The employer can add to the account tax free. The money belongs to the employee and can be used for medical expenses of almost any type.

What are the benefits of a Health Savings Account? Medical expenses are paid with pre-tax dollars, resulting in a discount. The employee can roll unused funds over to the next year. Employer contributions to a Health savings Account belong to the employee and they can take the money with them wherever they go. Should a major illness occur, the health insurance policy kicks in once the deductible is met.

Individual Health Insurance Defined

Individual Health Insurance is simply a policy that stands on its own, without being tied to a larger group of people. It can apply to a single individual, couples, or in some cases a family unit. Names vary from Individual Health Insurance to Family Health Insurance and some insurers refer to it as Private Health Insurance. In all cases the term Individual Health Insurance applies. In the absence of employer sponsored health insurance it provides a way for individuals and families to protect against the high cost of medical care and the ravages of a catastrophic illness.

Individual Health Insurance is often the only option for some people. The self employed, those who have lost their jobs, and students unable to be carried under their parents policy will often opt for Individual Health Insurance. Policies come in a wide range of coverages and deductibles, making the choice of an Individual Health Insurance policy a daunting but not impossible task. Asking the right questions and arming yourself with a little knowledge will go a long way in helping you pick the right Individual Health Insurance Policy for your lifestyle and health concerns.

Individual Health Insurance vs Employer Provided Health Insurance

In almost all cases the health insurance plan provided by an employer will compare favorably with individual health insurance. This is because you are taking advantage of group health insurance rates. This is also the best option for people who may have an
illness that prevents them from obtaining an individual health insurance plan on their own. More importantly, most employers will usually contribute some portion of the premium, lowering your out of pocket costs. In addition, you may also have the option of including
things like dental insurance and vision insurance into the mix, giving you a leg up on those costs as well. In almost all cases taking advantage of an employer sponsored health insurance plan will be the best option. If you feel you need more coverage, then
investigate health insurance plans that will supplement the basic coverage, for example, accident insurance or cancer insurance.

Compare Health Insurance with an Agent

Seek out one or more insurance agents to give you a broader view of the health insurance plans available. Take your time to compare things like deductibles, prescription drug coverage, policy limits, and exemptions. Health insurance policies can vary widely from company to company and even with the same company. Assess your unique situation and try to fit the policy as close to your needs as possible within your budget.

Compare and Evaluate Your Options

Some health insurance plans will allow you to pick your doctors. Others will
offer you a list of doctors to choose from. Before purchasing a plan, see if your regular
doctor will accept that insurance. Referrals are often handled differently within different plans. You may also have a choice of deductibles, allowing you to absorb some of the routine expenses in exchange for a lower overall premium. Knowing your situation and doing your homework is the best way to compare health insurance plans.

Cheap health insurance is a product everyone is looking for. Individuals and businesses would be very happy to get cheap health insurance that took care of all their needs. And that’s where the problem lies. The word cheap has a negative connotation, implying that it is less than high quality. So in reality, actually nobody is looking for cheap health insurance,
they’re just looking for a health insurance program that will cover large medical bills while remaining affordable.

The Search for Cheap Health Insurance

Let’s examine the basis for a search for cheap health insurance. Obviously we all understand that in the event of a critical illness or the need for prolonged treatment can result in huge medical bills. So the need for good medical coverage, while not a pressing immediate need, is always in the back of your mind. The real question is: Why search for cheap health insurance when what you want is GOOD health insurance? Let’s face it, paying for heath insurance that won’t help you when crunch time comes is simply
throwing your money away. On the other hand, paying a few extra dollars for health insurance that actually provides support when it is needed is money well spent.

Change Your Ideas about Cheap Health Insurance

The bottom line is that you have to change your mind and understand what you’re really looking for. Buying “cheap health insurance” and not getting any use out of it is just throwing your money away. A health insurance policy with too many restrictions and low limits isn’t really what you want. Ideally, you would like to have a policy that provides medical coverage for unexpected illnesses and accidents while also giving you a means of
obtaining preventative health care. All totaled, a health insurance policy that keeps you healthy, happy, and productive will turn out to be cheap health insurance.

Realistically, there are no hard and fast rules regarding the terms of Individual Health Insurance policies. What’s true in one state may not be true in another. What is consistent is the difference between Individual Health Insurance and Group Health Insurance. When you are a member of a Group Health Insurance plan, the company providing coverage to the group cannot exclude you from coverage. With Individual Health Insurance you will have to provide permission for the insurance company to examine your medical history and determine whether medical coverage will even be offered. This is a good reason to buy Individual Health Insurance before you or anyone in your family becomes seriously ill. This is also a good time to point out that when you choose a health insurance plan you want to make sue that the plan is guaranteed renewable, so that if you do become ill the plan cannot be cancelled.

Should you be suffering from a major or chronic illness, an Individual Health Insurance plan may still be available. In most cases however the insurance company will want to exclude coverage for a pre-existing illness either permanently or for a specified amount of time. Your own situation and the nature of your illness will determine whether or not this is a good choice. There are some states where the insurance company is not allowed to exclude illnesses. Unfortunately, from the insurance companies view, this will probably make you uninsurable. You may still be eligible for things like accident insurance or cancer insurance so be sure to check these options with your agent. Always be willing to ask questions and understand the coverage available to you under an Individual Health Insurance policy.
